How long does it take to redeem a reward in Africa? Speed benchmark by platform

The time from receiving a reward to completing redemption, benchmarked across platforms operating in Africa. The gap between fastest and slowest is larger than most buyers realise.

Average hours to redemption completion from reward delivery, by platform type operating in African markets.

What the data shows

The fastest platforms in African markets achieve median redemption completion within 2.3 hours of reward delivery. The slowest take over 72 hours — a gap that reflects infrastructure choices made at the platform design stage, not employee behaviour. The key differentiator is whether the redemption flow works within WhatsApp natively, within a mobile browser without app installation, or requires a dedicated app download. Each additional step in the redemption journey drops completion rates by approximately 12%. Platforms that require account creation before redemption lose 28% of recipients before they complete the flow.

What this means for Africa specifically

Bandwidth constraints, device limitations, and lower rates of app storage space mean that every additional step in an African redemption journey has higher drop-off than equivalent steps in European markets. The 'download our app to claim your reward' instruction, which may be mildly inconvenient in London, can be a genuine barrier for an employee in Kano or Kumasi with an entry-level Android and limited storage.

What HR teams should do

  • Ask your current platform vendor for your actual redemption completion rate — not the send rate, the completion rate
  • If your platform requires an app download or account creation for redemption, evaluate what your drop-off rate is at that step
  • Redemption speed and completion rate should be in your vendor SLA — if they are not, add them at the next contract renewal
