Bonusly and Africa: Filling the Local Fulfilment Gap

Bonusly's peer-to-peer points model works well everywhere. Here's what African employees don't get when it's time to redeem those points, and how RibiRewards closes the gap.

Bonusly and Africa: Filling the Local Fulfilment Gap

Bonusly's peer-to-peer points model is one of the easiest recognition systems to actually get adopted — low friction, social, immediate. None of that is the problem. The problem shows up when an employee in Accra, Lagos, or Nairobi tries to turn accumulated points into something they can actually spend.

Points accrue. Redemption doesn't follow.

Like most global recognition platforms, Bonusly's reward catalogue is built around markets where it already has retail partnerships — and African markets are, for most platforms, simply not that. The result is familiar: points that keep growing, and a redemption screen with little or nothing locally relevant on it.

Where something is available, it's typically priced in USD or GBP at a flat global rate — a rate that doesn't reflect local purchasing power, and doesn't reflect what things actually cost to fulfil in-country.

A pattern that's already proven elsewhere

This is the exact gap RibiRewards was built to close, and it's already running at scale through GEP Worldwide Africa — six countries, six currencies, one consistent handoff: the global platform recognises the person, and a locally-built RewardsCard handles the actual reward.

Keep Bonusly for the points, add local redemption underneath

There's no need to replace Bonusly to fix this. Keep it for peer-to-peer recognition and the points system your team already knows. RibiRewards sits underneath as the fulfilment layer — a RewardsCard priced and redeemed in the recipient's own currency, at brands they already shop at, in their own country. Add a recipient, fund it, and the card issues automatically the moment payment succeeds — no invoice cycle, no VAT correction, no multi-week wait.

See the full comparison and self-serve funding flow on our Bonusly alternative for African teams page.

The same gap, different recognition tool

Companies running Kudos or Workhuman hit this same wall. If your team spans more than one African country, the fix doesn't depend on which recognition platform sits on top — it's the same local fulfilment layer underneath, and if you're already on PaySpace, the same payroll data can trigger it automatically.
