What African employees want for year-end: survey results from 2,000 respondents
We asked 2,000 African employees what they actually want for year-end. A hamper was not the top answer in a single market surveyed.
What the data shows
Choice reward card: 42% of respondents across all markets. Experience gift (dining, spa, event): 28%. Cash equivalent or mobile money: 16%. Physical hamper: 9%. Branded merchandise: 5%. The hamper — historically the default year-end gift in African corporate environments — is the least preferred option by a significant margin, chosen by only 9% of respondents as their first preference. The pattern is consistent across Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana, and South Africa, though the degree of preference for choice cards is highest in Nigeria at 51%.
What this means for Africa specifically
The hamper has persisted as the default not because employees prefer it, but because it is the path of least resistance for procurement teams — a single SKU, bulk purchasing, known vendor relationships. The data suggests a significant goodwill gap between what HR teams find easy to procure and what employees would actually choose. Digital choice cards are now logistically as simple as hampers — and significantly better received.
What HR teams should do
- If your current default is a physical hamper, run a one-question preference survey with your own employees before this December — the result may change your procurement decision
- Choice cards and digital rewards are logistically no more complex than hampers at most company sizes and are now available in-country for most African markets
- The data on preference should be part of your vendor pitch to your own leadership — moving away from hampers is not a cost decision, it is an employee satisfaction decision
