Year-end rewards budget benchmarks: what African companies spend per employee in December
The benchmark range by market, so you can see exactly where your December budget sits relative to comparable companies before finalising your spend.
What the data shows
The median African company spends the equivalent of $12–18 per employee on December rewards, with significant variance by country and sector. South African companies lead at a median of $28 per head, reflecting both higher absolute salary levels and a more mature corporate gifting market. Nigerian companies sit at $9–14 median. Kenyan companies at $11–16. Financial services and FMCG companies sit in the top quartile of spend in every market. NGOs and education sector companies consistently sit at the bottom quartile. The top-quartile threshold across all markets is approximately $35 per head.
What this means for Africa specifically
The purchasing power of $15 in Lagos is materially different from $15 in Johannesburg — which is why per-head dollar benchmarks should be read alongside the local salary context. A $12 gift card in Lagos represents roughly 2.5 hours of median professional take-home pay. The same value in Johannesburg represents less than 45 minutes. Perceived value is relative to local economic context, not absolute dollar amount.
What HR teams should do
- Convert your per-head December spend to local currency and express it as a percentage of a day's salary — this gives you a more intuitive sense of how it will land
- If you are below market median, closing that gap is a higher priority than optimising the form of the gift
- Budget approval conversations go better when you present the spend in per-head terms alongside the market benchmark rather than as a total programme cost
