Blockchain gaming user retention in Africa with gift cards

Play-to-earn blockchain games had their defining moment in Africa during 2021–2022, when Axie Infinity players in the Philippines were joined by players across Nigeria, Ghana, and Kenya earning meaningful income through gameplay. The subsequent token price collapse revealed the core vulnerability of token-only reward models: when the token is the only reward, and the token loses value, the reason to play disappears.

The retention problem for blockchain games in Africa is not unique to Africa — it's a global challenge for the play-to-earn model. But it has specific dimensions in African markets where players are often playing for genuine income supplementation rather than entertainment, and where the alternative of simply stopping is more easily taken when the economic case collapses.

African market localisation

Gift card rewards for blockchain games must be localised to the African market — Nigerian grocery chains, Kenyan supermarkets, South African retailers. A Roblox gift card or Amazon gift card is not a useful reward for a player in Ibadan or Eldoret. The localisation of the reward catalogue is what makes the offramp genuinely valuable.
