RewardsCard vs SureGifts vs GiftPesa: Which Is Right for Your Team?
A no-fluff comparison of Africa's top employee reward card options — coverage, brands, tracking, and HR workflow. Everything you need to make the right call.
If you're evaluating employee reward cards for your African team, three names will likely come up: SureGifts, GiftPesa, and RewardsCard by RibiRewards. They're not identical products, and choosing the wrong one creates real operational pain. Here's an honest breakdown of how they compare. For more on this, see our piece on Why Gift Cards Beat Cash for Employee Milestones Every Time.
Geographic Coverage
This is the most important variable for companies with teams across multiple African markets.
SureGifts is primarily a Nigerian product. It has strong brand coverage in Lagos and Abuja and is well-regarded within the Nigerian market, but its multi-country capabilities are limited. If your team is entirely Nigeria-based, this isn't a problem. If you have people in Kenya, Ghana, or South Africa, it becomes one quickly.
GiftPesa is Kenya-focused. It works well in Nairobi and has solid Safaricom and local brand integration. Again, strong for single-market Kenya teams, constrained for anything broader.
RewardsCard by RibiRewards is live across 10 African countries — Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana, South Africa, Egypt, Morocco, Tanzania, Uganda, Senegal, and Ethiopia — with Rwanda, Côte d'Ivoire, Zimbabwe, and Cameroon coming soon. Each country gets its own localised brand catalogue, not just a global catalogue applied everywhere. For companies with distributed African teams, this is a material operational advantage.
Brand Catalogues
The value of a reward card lives entirely in what recipients can spend it on. If the brands aren't ones they actually use, the card doesn't feel like a reward.
SureGifts has strong Nigerian brand coverage — major retailers, telecoms, and dining chains. Its Nigerian catalogue is arguably among the deepest in market. Outside Nigeria, coverage drops significantly.
GiftPesa's strength is Safaricom integration — M-Pesa, data bundles, and Safaricom products are deeply embedded in the Kenyan experience. For Nairobi teams, this resonates strongly.
RewardsCard covers both — MTN, Airtel, Glo, and 9mobile in Nigeria; Safaricom and Airtel in Kenya; MTN and Vodafone in Ghana; Woolworths and Takealot in South Africa. Alongside the telecom coverage in every market, the catalogues include food delivery, rides, dining, wellness, fashion, and cinema. Global brands (Netflix, Apple, Nike, Zara) come standard on every card regardless of country.
HR Workflow and Tooling
This is where the products diverge most significantly in day-to-day use.
SureGifts has a functional dashboard for Nigerian use cases. Bulk sending works, but the experience is built around single-market operations.
GiftPesa is similarly optimised for Kenya. Their tooling is clean for Nairobi-based teams.
RibiRewards was built explicitly as HR infrastructure — which means the workflow is designed for the person managing rewards across an organisation, not for one-off sends. Key features: wallet funding in local currencies, CSV bulk upload for any number of recipients, cross-country sends from a single dashboard, delivery and redemption tracking per recipient, and partial-spend support (so employees can use part of the balance now and return later).
Physical Cards
All three offer some form of physical card. The distinction is fulfilment. RewardsCard handles physical card fulfilment in-country for each of its 10 markets — meaning a physical card sent to someone in Accra is fulfilled in Ghana, not shipped internationally. This matters for reliability and timing.
The Honest Verdict
If your entire team is in Nigeria and you want deep local brand coverage, SureGifts is a credible option. If your team is entirely Kenya-based and Safaricom integration is your priority, GiftPesa does that well.
If you have a team spanning more than one African country — or if you expect to expand — RewardsCard is the only option that works without a country-by-country setup problem. The multi-country coverage, combined with HR-first workflow tooling and local catalogue depth, makes it the right default for any company operating at scale across Africa.
