What a Rewards API Makes Possible for African Fintechs and Super-Apps
Building reward and loyalty infrastructure in-house is a multi-quarter distraction for a fintech or super-app team whose core product has nothing to do with reward fulfilment. Here's what changes when it's an API call instead.
Most African fintechs and super-apps arrive at the same idea independently: users who complete an action — a referral, a savings milestone, a first transaction, a loyalty threshold — should get something back. It's good product thinking. What derails it is what happens next, when "reward the user" turns into a multi-quarter build involving supplier sourcing, multi-country compliance, redemption tracking and a support queue nobody budgeted engineering time for.
Our piece on building a pan-African rewards API for global payroll providers covers this from the HR-tech integration angle. This one is about the same underlying problem from the fintech and super-app side: rewards as a feature inside a product that was never meant to become a rewards company.
The build-it-yourself trap
Building reward fulfilment in-house means sourcing and managing suppliers in every market you operate in, handling currency and compliance differences country by country, building redemption and inventory tracking so a reward doesn't get promised twice, and staffing support for the inevitable "my reward didn't arrive" tickets. None of that is your product. All of it has to work correctly before a single user redeems a single reward, and all of it needs to be rebuilt every time you enter a new market.
Teams that go down this path usually discover the real cost isn't the initial build — it's that reward infrastructure needs ongoing maintenance forever, competing for engineering time against the actual product roadmap.
What an API call replaces
The RibiRewards Reward API collapses that build into a handful of endpoints: issue a reward to a user, let them choose from a local catalogue, track delivery and redemption, and report on programme performance — across every supported African market without separate integration work per country. See the full technical reference in our API documentation.
For a super-app, that means a referral bonus, a milestone reward or a loyalty perk can ship as a feature inside an existing sprint, not a separate infrastructure project. For a fintech, it means a savings or transaction-based reward can go live in every market the app operates in without a country-by-country vendor search.
Three patterns fintechs and super-apps actually build
Referral and growth loops: reward both sides of a successful referral instantly, so the loop closes while the invite is still fresh in the referrer's mind. Milestone and retention rewards: recognise a savings target hit, a transaction streak, or a loyalty tier upgrade with a reward the user actually wants, chosen from a real catalogue rather than a fixed, generic item. And embedded cashback or loyalty: let users redeem points or cashback balances into real rewards — vouchers, airtime, experiences — instead of a balance that sits unused in the app.
Webhooks, not polling
Reward status — delivered, opened, redeemed — needs to flow back into your product in real time, not on a batch delay. Our webhooks push that status the moment it changes, so a user's in-app reward state stays accurate without your team polling an endpoint on a schedule. Full integration patterns, request/response shapes and authentication are covered in the developer documentation.
The question worth asking before you build
If your team is scoping reward or loyalty infrastructure as an internal build, it's worth asking: is reward fulfilment actually our product, or a feature inside it? If it's the latter — which it is for almost every fintech and super-app — an API call is very likely faster to ship, cheaper to maintain, and already solved for every market you're likely to expand into next.
